CIELAB as a Digital Measurement Layer

Why a standardized color coordinate system is useful when camera images need to become comparable measurements.

Overview

CIELAB represents color using three numerical coordinates: L*, a*, and b*. The coordinate system separates lightness from two chromatic directions, making it useful for quantitative comparison.

From Image to Data

A camera image begins as RGB values. A calibrated processing pipeline can transform the information toward a device-independent representation and then into CIELAB.

Capture → Calibration → Color transformation → CIELAB → Comparison.

Measurement, Not Diagnosis

A numerical color difference does not by itself identify a disease. It tells us that two measured color states are different under defined measurement conditions.

Measurement, classification, and clinical interpretation are separate layers and should each be validated.

Research Direction

Future work can evaluate repeatability, inter-device agreement, calibration robustness, segmentation accuracy, and correlation with reference measurements.
